ABCD is a quarterly journal with a single annual volume, official organ of the Brazilian College of Digestive Surgery (CBCD), and its mission is to publish articles on clinical and experimental studies that contribute to the development of research, teaching and assistance in surgical and clinical gastroenterology, and related areas.

Sections include: original articles, review articles, surgical technique articles, guidelines, consensuses or updates, editorials (by invitation) and letters to the editor. There may be other sections depending on the journal's interest or the need for dissemination.

Works submitted for publication must be unpublished and exclusively intended for ABCD. They must not have been previously published in a similar form and should not be under consideration for publication in another national or international journal.

Its content must include a scientific contribution to surgical and clinical gastroenterology, have scientific merit and highlight the national and international literature.

All matters related to human research and animal research must have prior approval from the Research Ethics Committee (REC) of the institution where the work was carried out, or in another local or regional institution if there is no such committee where the study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki, revised in 2013. Following current standards of good practice in human research, it is the full responsibility of the authors that patients enrolled in the study must have signed an informed consent form.

ABCD supports the policies of the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) in registering clinical trials, recognizing the importance of these initiatives for the international registration and dissemination of clinical trial information for open access. Therefore, clinical trials will only be accepted for publication after they have received an identification number from one of the Clinical Trials Registers validated by the criteria established by WHO and ICMJE, whose addresses are available at the ICMJE website (www.icmje.org). The identification number must be registered at the end of the abstract.
